What Is The Best Time Of Day To Workout

While trying to decide on the right time to exercise may seem tedious, there are some important considerations you should consider. Deciding on the right time is completely dependent on your body’s composition and physical makeup. The most important factor you should take into account is the time of day, which will enable you to make exercise a habit. Human beings are very habitual creatures, and we like a level of certainty in our lives. Think about it. Maybe you have a cup of coffee every morning at around the same time, or you read every night before bed. Perhaps you take the same route to work every morning. The reason we do this is that we like having that control in our lives. In a life filled with uncertainty, we like to control the few things we do have control over.

Everyone has a certain circadian rhythm which is governed by the twenty-four-hour pattern of the earth’s rotation. This rhythm influences body functions such as heart rate, body temperature, hormone levels, and heart rate. All of these bodily functions play a role in your body’s readiness for exercise. Because of this, it is important to know your body’s own circadian rhythm. We all have different rhythms. In fact, this rhythm is inborn into you. You can reset this rhythm by changing meal times or by waking up at a different hour. You need to figure out which chronotype you are. “Owls” are more alert during the evenings while “larks” (morning chronotypes) are more alert in the mornings.

So What Does This Have To Do With Exercise?

Knowing your chronotype will enable you to decide on the best time for exercise in your day. If you’re a lark, the best time for exercise is right in the morning. If you’re an owl, the best time for exercise is in the evening. As mentioned above, you can reset your circadian rhythm. Many people find it easier to work out in the morning. Cedric Bryant, a PhD and Chief Science Officer with the American Council On Exercise in San Diego, says it is easiest to be consistent with morning exercise. As your day progresses, it is easier to become distracted and lose focus.

Making exercise a habit is a key to being able to consistently lose weight. Once we develop a habit, it is very difficult to break it. Just ask a consistent smoker how difficult it is to break that habit. The same is true for exercise. Moreover, the more you do it, the more ingrained it will be in your life. Try doing some form of exercise every morning or evening at the same time (depending on your chronotype) for a few weeks. This exercise will soon become a habit in your life, and it will be very difficult to stop. Luckily for you, this is a very healthy habit! Develop healthy habits such as this, and you will be well on your way to losing all the weight you ever wanted.

Bottom Line

Well, what is the great time of day to work out? That depends on the type of person you are. For some, the morning will be the best time, while for others, the evening is. This also depends on your work/life schedule. Well, if you have to be at work early in the morning, you may not be able to exercise in the morning even if you are a lark. In this case, you just have to reset your body’s circadian rhythm in order to exercise at the appropriate time. Just make sure that you consistently work out at the same time, so exercise becomes a habit in your life.
